The Gauhati High Court on August 3, closed a PIL seeking a direction to the state government to complete the construction of the Polytechnic Institute.
The PIL has been filed by Roton Hojai and four others seeking a direction to the respondent authorities to complete the construction of the Polytechnic Institute situated at Chatowapu, Haflong, in the Dima Hasao district.
The concern raised by the petitioners is that although necessary administrative and financial sanctions had been given by the Government for the said Polytechnic in the year 2012, the Polytechnic has not been functional till date as the construction of the Polytechnic complex could not be completed due to slow progress in the construction works.
On Tuesday, Anuj Borgohain, Chief Engineer, PWD (Building) Assam, has appeared before the High Court and has apprised that the construction works could not be completed till date as the contract of the construction works given earlier to the contractors had to be cancelled twice for slow progress of the construction work/no work at all and, now, the contract works have been allotted to a third contractor who has started the works from today and that the works would be completed within a period of sixteen months.

The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak in view of the facts apprised to the court and the assurance given by the Chief Engineer, PWD (Building) Assam, that the construction works would be completed within sixteen months, find no reason for keeping the PIL pending.
“Accordingly, the PIL is closed. We hope and trust that the construction works of the aforesaid Polytechnic would be completed within the period of sixteen months from today as has been assured by the i/c, Chief Engineer, PWD (Building) Assam,” the order reads.
