Plea Filed In Delhi HC For Peaceful Protest Outside UP Bhawan Against Detention Of 2 Nigerians

A petition has been filed before the Delhi High Court seeking permission for peaceful protest before Uttar Pradesh Bhawan under the banner of #BlackLivesMatters against the alleged illegal detention of two Nigerians by the UP Police.

The petition has been filed by an organization named  Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) contending that two Nigerian nationals were arrested by UP Police and have been illegally detained at Surajpur police lines, 49 battalions in Greater Noida district, since September last year.

The petitioner organization has further alleged that since the last eight months, neither any person nor a lawyer is being allowed to meet the two Nigerians.

It has further been alleged that reasons for arrest have not been mentioned by the Police and also there is no information available to the UP Police regarding the case.

The organization had on June 16 written a letter addressed to the Delhi Police seeking permission to hold a peaceful protest outside the UP Bhawan under the banner of #BlackLivesMatters on June 23, however no response was received by the organization from the Delhi Police.

Having left with no more options, the petitioner was inclined to move the High Court.

Two Biafran persons, who are of Nigerian nationality were illegally detained/arrested/taken away by the UP Police on September 24, 2019, and thereafter have illegally been kept at Surajpur police lines, 49 battalions, Greater Noida, the plea said.

None of their family members have been notified about their detention and no case has been shown to be registered against them and the advocates who went there to meet them were made to run from pillar to post and meet hierarchies of officers but were not allowed to meet them, it added.

The petitioner organization has also urged the Court to seek records pertaining to the alleged illegal detention of the two Nigerians.

The matter has been listed for hearing on June 18.
