Police-lawyers scuffle: Allahabad High Court directs UP Police to pay compensation to advocates in September 2004 case

The Allahabad High Court has directed the respondents/police personnel to pay Rs1/- as compensation to the petitioner/ lawyers in a September 2004 case in which a scuffle took place between lawyers of the Court and police personnel.

The Division Bench of Justice Vivek Chaudhary and Justice Om Prakash Shukla passed this order while hearing a petition filed by Dr Ashok Nigam.

The petition is filed by Dr Ashok Nigam, Advocate who is Chairman of the Elders Committee and one of the leading and senior lawyers of the Court.

The grievance is that in September, 2004, a scuffle took place between lawyers of the Court and police personnel and hence, compensation should be paid for the loss/injuries suffered by the lawyers and appropriate action be taken.

The matter is quite old and at the outset the Court inquired from Dr Ashok Nigam, Senior Advocate/petitioner with regard to the compensation he expects. Showing his large heartedness Dr Ashok Nigam, Senior Advocate/petitioner states that he would accept any compensation fixed by the Court as the fight was more with regard to honour of lawyers.

Looking into the seniority stature and respect Dr Ashok Nigam, Senior Advocate/petitioner commands as a token of respect, the Court directed the respondents to pay Rs1/- as compensation to the petitioner.

With the aforesaid directions, the Court disposed of the petition.
