President appoints Justice BR Gavai as 52nd Chief Justice of India

President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday appointed Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) with effect from May 14, 2025.

Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the information on his X account.

As per the tweet, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 14th May, 2025.”

On April 16, incumbent CJI Sanjiv Khanna recommended the name of Justice BR Gavai, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.

Justice Gavai would take oath on May 14, following the retirement of incumbent CJI Sanjiv Khanna on May 13.

President Droupadi Murmu would administer the oath of office to Justice Gavai.

He would be the second CJI belonging to the Scheduled Caste community after Justice KG Balakrishnan, who retired as the CJI in 2010.

He would have a tenure of six months and demit office on December 23, 2025, after attaining the age of 65 years.

Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati. He joined the Bar on March 16, 1985.

Justice Gavai was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003, and became a permanent judge on November 12, 2005. He served at the High Court’s principal seat in Mumbai and Benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.
