Punjab and Haryana Court disposes PIL by NGO alleging use of oxytocin to increase milk yield in cows

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by The Peedu’s People Welfare Society, an NGO, alleging cruelty to animals in violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the rules framed thereunder.

The petitioner specifically highlighted the use of oxytocin to increase milk yield in cows and cattle.

During the hearing, it was acknowledged that the Animal Welfare Board of India, Animal Welfare Board, Punjab, and Animal Welfare Board, Haryana are empowered to address such grievances.

Despite the petitioner’s previous complaints and representations to the respondent authorities, no action had been taken.

The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sudhir Singh directed the petitioner to file fresh representations along with a copy of the petition and annexures before the Animal Welfare Boards.

These boards will examine the petitioner’s grievances, provide a fair opportunity to be heard, and pass a speaking order within 60 days of receiving the certified copy of the order.
