The Punjab and Haryana High Court has recently disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) alleging the unregulated manufacturing, sale, storage, and use of Chinese string (manjha) in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh.
The PIL was filed by one Rahul Kapoor.
The petitioner claimed that this poses a significant threat to public safety and human life.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel, acknowledged that the petitioner had already submitted a representation to the relevant authorities on January 12, 2025, highlighting the issue of illegal manufacturing, sale, and use of Chinese Dori.
In light of this, the court directed the respondents (the State of Punjab and others) to examine the petitioner’s grievances and provide a detailed response within 30 days.
