Punjab and Haryana High Court disposes of PIL highlighting issues of coaching centres in Chandigarh

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed highlighting the issue of coaching institutes in Chandigarh violating the norms under the Chandigarh Building Rules, 2017.

The petitioner alleged that these institutes were compromising the safety and security of students attending classes.

In response to the court’s notice, an affidavit was filed by Dr Khushpreet Kaur, Assistant Estate Officer-II, U T Chandigarh, revealing that inspections were conducted at 28 basement sites in various sectors of Chandigarh.

Show-cause notices were issued to eight establishments, including one coaching institute, for violating the building rules.

The court observed that the Chandigarh Administration had shown bona fides by initiating action in accordance with the law.

Therefore, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel deemed it appropriate to dispose of the petition, directing the administration to conduct and conclude the proceedings expeditiously, preferably within three months.

If the administration fails to do so, the petitioner is free to re-visit the court.
