The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday last heard a plea asking why there were separate and different cremation grounds for Brahmins, Backward Classes and Sikhs in a village in Ambala District. The petitioner’s application filed earlier on September 11 this year was rejected by an order passed by the Deputy Commissioner.
The Division Bench of Justice Jaswant Singh observed in its order that five cremation grounds were already existing and earmarked for different communities and as such it deemed it appropriate to seek a response from Ambala Deputy Commissioner on “such divisions of society”.
“However, in view of the fact that five cremation grounds are already existing, as noticed at page 45 of the paper book, being earmarked for different communities, we deem it appropriate to seek response from the Deputy Commissioner, Ambala with regard to such divisions of the society and the common authority, who shall administer all the said cremation grounds so as to remove the apprehension of the petitioners that they would not be permitted to avail the benefit of the existing cremation grounds for cremation of members of their communities,” the Court observed .
The Counsel appearing for the Petitioners sought directions to the Deputy Commissioner and another respondent to restore the cremation ground belonging to them and other residents belonging to the Brahmins and Backward Classes.

The matter has now been listed for further hearing on January 13, 2021
