Rape accused BSP MP granted 2 days parole to take oath

The Allahabad High Court on Thursday granted two days parole to rape-accused Bahujan Samaj Party MP Atul Rai for taking oath as Member of Parliament in New Delhi.

Rai won the general elections last year from Ghosi parliamentary constituency in Maunath Bhanjan district of Uttar Pradesh.

The BSP MP has been lodged in jail in connection with a rape case.

An FIR was filed against Rai in midst of election campaign on May 1, 2019 in Lanka Police station of Varanasi district. He was thereafter arrested and put in jail.

Justice Ramesh Sinha delivered the order granting two days parole to Rai, saying that Rai will go to the national capital on January 29 in police custody and then the police will take him back into custody on January 31, once his oath as a Parliamentarian is done.

The counsel appearing for the BSP MP had mentioned before the court that Rai couldn’t take oath after being elected in the Lok Sabha polls as his fail bail plea was denied. He made these submissions during the second hearing.

Atul Rai emerged victorious from the Ghosi parliamentary constituency defeating his nearest rival and then incumbent MP Harinarayan Rajbhar of the BJP.
