Rizwanur Rehman death case: SC may hear discharge application if witnesses not produced by CBI by Sept.

The case of the death of a 30-year old computer programmer Rizwanur Rehman, who died under suspicious circumstances in Kolkata on September 21, 2007 and one which created a massive furore at the time, has come up before the Supreme Court bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan through an SLP.

the case is against Ashok Kumar Todi (businessman, owner of Lux) and his brother Pradeep, who have been charged by the CBI for abetting the suicide of Rizwanur, who had a matrimonial relationship with the former’s daughter Priyanka Todi. The body of Rizwanur was found on the rail tracks, but there was little to how that it was a genuine suicide.

The multimillionaire Todis wre against Rizwanur’s marrying their daughter. Not only the class difference, but also the religion was said to have come in the way.

On Wednesday (August 8) Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand appeared for the CBI and submitted that two witnesses had been examined. When the court asked how many witnesses were there, she said nine.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi submitted that the matter be adjourned to September. If the remaining witnesses are not produced by the CBI, then the court will hear the discharge application.

The matter as adjourned to September 22.
