The Supreme Court on Thursday (July 12) observed that the compensation for the hit and run victims should be increased to Rs 2 lakh from Rs 50 thousand.
The bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta made the observation after agreeing to the amicus Gaurav Aggarwal’s contention that the victims were getting a dismal amount of Rs 50 thousand as compensation.
“In absence of any scheme framed by the state govts in cases of hit and run the compensation is very low though the insurance companies are ready to compensate but without policy no one getting good compensation,” Aggarwal said.
The matter has been listed for next hearing to July 20.
The bench was hearing a plea raising concern on the compensation pertaining to hit and run victims and also seeking a change in the insurance policies regarding motor accident victims.
