Appeal to hear case on marital rape goes to SC

Sabarimala templeAs hearings on the ban on entry of women (aged 10 – 50) to the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple in Kerala concluded at the Supreme Court on Wednesday (August 1), the constitution bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra reserved its verdict.

The bench asked counsels from either side to compile their submissions and submit before the bench in seven days. The bench said that the order will be passed thereafter.

The bench ordered the Advocates on Record of both sides to collect the submissions.

The case came off a batch of petitions filed by Indian Young Lawyers Association.

Defendants, the Kerala government had mellowed down during the hearings and was possibly considering allowing the entry. This weakened the case of the defendants substantially.
