Supreme Court Collegium recommends two judicial officers as Tripura High Court judges

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended two judicial officers to be appointed as judges of the Tripura High Court.

The Collegium, in an official resolution which has been uploaded online, mentioned the suitability of judicial officers Biswajit Palit and Sabyasachi Datta Purkayastha for appointment.

The Supreme Court Collegium also disclosed that there were cerain reasons for not recommending many senior judicial officers as the judges of High Court.

The resolution said that while considering the above proposal, it is also to be considered that the proposal involves non-recommendation of senior judicial officers.

The names of judicial officers Palit and Purkayastha were recommended in December 2021 by the High Court Collegium but the Chief Minister and Governor of Tripura did not respond to the proposal for over six weeks.

The proposals were, therefore, forwarded to the Supreme Court Collegium without waiting for the inputs of these two functionaries.

The Supreme Court Collegium has now recommended the appointment of these judicial officers as Tripura High Court judges after consulting judges conversant with the affairs of the High Court and considering inputs from the Central government.

The recommended judicial officer Biswajit Palit is currently a Legal Remembrancer and Law Secretary with the State government.

Talking about Sabyasachi Datta Purkayastha, he is the current Director of the Tripura Judicial Academy.

The Supreme Court Collegium disclosed that one consultee-judges had suggested that Purkayastha’s elevation may be considered later. Further, another consultee judge did not express any view.

Both judicial officers have now been recommended for appointment as Tripura High Court judges after factoring in that there was no adverse report against either of them.
