Supreme Court Denies Bail To VVIP Chopper Scam Accused Christian Michel

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the bail application of VVIP Agusta-Westland chopper scam accused Christian Michel.

The case was heard by the division bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul & Justice B.R. Gavai which observed that the plea taken by the accused that he may contact with COVID-19 due to overcrowding of prison is unfounded.

Michel in his application had stated that he is 59 years old and has a history of bad health which will make him an easy prey to Coronavirus. The application filed by him also referred to a SC order asking the States and the Union Territories to set up high level committees and determine prisoners who could be released on parole so as to avoid overcrowding in prisons in the wake of COVID-19.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court on 11th April has dismissed the bail application of the accused against which he moved to the apex court. The High Power Committee constituted for decongestion of prisons by the order of the Supreme Court had rejected his application for temporary bail.
