The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition seeking re-election on 20 Assembly seats of Haryana.
The order was passed by the Bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra.
Earlier in the day, the matter was mentioned before the Apex Court for urgent listing.
Taking exception to the prayers sought in the petition, the CJI said that an elected government could not be restrained from taking the oath. He warned the petitioner’s counsel of dismissing the matter with costs.
However, the counsel insisted on arguing the matter. The CJI then listed the case for hearing today itself and asked the lawyer to circulate the papers.
The Bench took up the plea soon after the marital rape case hearing, shortly before rising at 4:00 pm.
The counsel submitted that he was seeking re-election in 20 Vidhan Sabha seats because of inaccuracies in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He said the Congress party has given a representation to the Election Commission raising these concerns.
The Apex Court expressed its disapproval over the nature of the reliefs sought in the petition and dismissed it
Assembly elections were held in a single phase on all 90 Vidhan Sabha seats of Haryana on October 5, 2024 and the results were declared on October 8, 2024. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the winner. BJP leader Naib Singh Saini is taking oath as the Chief Minister of Haryana today.
