Suvendu Adhikari moves Calcutta High Court seeking CBI, NIA probe in Ram Navami violence case in West Bengal

Suvendhu Adhikari, the West Bengal Leader of Opposition who belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has moved to the Calcutta High Court seeking a probe on violence that broke out during Ram Navami processions in the State by Central agencies.

A public interest litigation (PIL), has been filed through Advocate Suryaneel Das, which seeks that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA)should probe the incidents of arson and use of explosives, respectively.

The plea also states that all necessary permissions had been taken from concerned authorities to conduct the marches, despite which communal tensions ensued.

From the manner of the attack, whereby the attackers started pelting stones and hurling bombs from rooftops, it can be safely assumed that the entire attack was pre-planned, and the only intention of the Antisocial attackers was to prevent the hindus from celebrating their festival and create a communal tension.”

Adhikari said that although such attacks are a regular feature each year, this year, the same has crossed all limits with the police officials left helpless.

The violence involved hurling of petrol bombs and alcohol bottles, aggravating the explosives used and leaving people injured by glass shards, the PIL added.

Adhikari has also sought the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces in the affected areas to ensure peace.

The leader said that it can be well concluded that the attack on the procession was the State sponsored one, which appreciated the conduct of the police in perpetrating the violence on the Ram Navami Shobha Yatra at Howrah.”

The partisan nature of the police is evident from the fact that they are only taking action against and hounding the victims, rather than the actual perpetrators at hand, Adhikari alleges.

As per the petition there has been a complete breakdown of the law and order machinery in the State, and a probe by impartial agencies is needed.

It is contended that the manner in which violence was carried suggest conspiracyof another level.

It is speculated that organized crime groups may be involved which may also include terrorist organizations which attacks the security of the entire national as a whole.

Directions are also sought to the State government to produce relevant original documents as may be needed in the case.
