Zubeen Garg death: Event organiser moves Supreme Court seeking CBI probe, consolidation of FIRs

Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the Northeast Festival, has approached the Supreme Court challenging multiple criminal proceedings initiated against him following the death of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19, 2025.

In his petition, Mahanta has sought a transfer of the investigation to a central agency such as the CBI or NIA, under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge. He has also prayed for the consolidation of over 50 FIRs filed across Assam and other states, which accuse him of culpable homicide, conspiracy, and negligence.

Mahanta argues that he has been wrongfully implicated, pointing out that Singaporean authorities concluded Garg’s death was caused by drowning, with no signs of foul play. He claims the charges arise solely from his role as organiser of the event where Garg was scheduled to perform the day after his death.

The plea also highlights that political commentary and extensive media coverage have prejudiced the investigation, with state leaders publicly declaring that Mahanta should not be permitted to organise events in future. He has further alleged that he faces death threats, while a Look-Out Circular issued against him has curtailed his movement and prevented him from returning home.

Among the reliefs sought are protection from arrest, suspension of the Look-Out Circular, and a judicial direction restraining the media from speculative reporting until the investigation concludes.

Reports suggest that Mahanta was taken into custody soon after filing his petition, with his legal team expected to update the plea to reflect these developments.

The sudden death of Garg has triggered widespread public grief and suspicion. His family has raised questions about the circumstances under which he entered the water despite reportedly being unwell. In India, police have already arrested Mahanta, Garg’s manager, and two band members, booking them under serious charges including culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy.
