The issue of speedy trial of under-trial prisoners is getting better in the country, Attorney General (AG) K K Venugopal on Monday (July 30) informed the Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud.

The court had taken up the case on a suo moto motion.

The AG submitted a status report on the situation to the bench and also said that prisons is a state subject, so the states must also inform about the happenings in the state prisons. The AG suggested that all the standing counsels of the states must be called upon for providing clarification and told that the notice is issued was not only to the Union of India.

The matter listed for the first week of September.
