On Women’s Day, CJI Bobde clarifies ‘will you marry her’ query, says Supreme Court has highest respect for womanhood

The Chief Justice further clarified that he never asked the petitioner to marry the victim and that the reputation of the Supreme Court lied at the hands of the Bar.

Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde on Monday, also the International Women’s Day, clarified that the Supreme Court has the highest respect for womanhood and said news reports and activists misreported the “Will you marry her” query to create a controversy and tarnish the image of the Apex Court.

The Chief Justice clarified he never asked the petitioner to marry the victim and that the reputation of the Supreme Court lied at the hands of the Bar. The comment was made by the Chief Justice while hearing a plea by a 14-year-old seeking permission to terminate her 26-week pregnancy.

The petitioner belongs to the state of Haryana, who alleged she was “cruelly raped” by her cousin which led to the unwanted pregnancy.

The Court had issued notice and directed the medical board in Karnal to submit its report on the previous hearing the Court had directed the state of Haryana to submit the report in a sealed cover by March 8. The bench today has listed the matter for next hearing on Friday.
