The Supreme Court today adjourned the hearing on a petition, seeking cancellation of examination for Class XII, requesting to declare the results of students on the basis of their earlier grading as their main final examination.
The Bench of Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and A.M. Khanwilkar observed that the government is likely to take a decision on the exams by June 1.
“Be optimistic. Maybe by Monday, some resolution will be in your favour. We will hear the matter on Monday,” said the Court.
“The other side- CBSE, ICSE and Centre- should be represented. Serve copies of the petition to the lawyers,” it added.
The petition was filed by Advocate Mamta Sharma, amid the second wave of widespread COVID-19 pandemic, which is more severe and worse than last year.
The plea stated: “In view of the unprecedented health emergency and rising numbers of the COVID-19 cases in the country, the conduct of examination (either offline/online/blended) in upcoming weeks is not possible and delay in examination will cause irreparable loss to the students as time is the essence in taking admission in higher education courses in foreign universities.”
Ms Sharma stated that around 77 students reached out to her with their grievances over the issue. Further digging into the issue, Ms Sharma found more than eight lakh tweets addressed to the PMO, Ministry of Human Resource Development and the CBSE, to cancel the class XII examinations, considering the stress and anxiety level of the students.

The plea has sought direction to the respondents to cancel the examination of Class XII and devise an objective methodology to declare the result of class XII within a specific timeframe.
