Delhi Pollution: Supreme Court agrees to hear petition seeking urgent intervention

The Apex Court has given assent to hearing the petition seeking the urgent intervention of the Court in checking the rising levels of air pollution in Delhi.

In a plea before the bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) UU Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi, petitioner appearing in person spoke of the Delhi which is choking due to the ever growing pollution.

The Court expressed its apprehension on whether they should be hearing the case, and questioned the petitioner if it was right means for him to file a petition under Article 32 of the Constitution.

Th Court has however agreed to list the matter on November 10, 2022.

The plea mentions the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the National Capital Region which has crossed the mark of 500 indicating highest levels of pollution.

Petition mentions how Noida has already closed their schools and this problem calls for an intervention as it is unfit for residents.

Parali (stubble) burning in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana was cited as the reason for to the sharp rise in pollution.

CJI however said that as per the experts stubble burning cannot be the sole reason for increased pollution, whereas the petitioner stated that the increase in the stubble burning lead to the pollution levels rising.

On hearing the petitioner’s arguments, the Court agreed to list the case on November 10 for further hearing.
