Electoral Rolls: Supreme Court directs Election Commission to inform it about steps taken against duplicate entries

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to file a response within two weeks regarding the steps taken by the Commission for the revision of electoral rolls in respect of duplicate entries.

The Bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra passed the order on a petition filed by NGO Samvidhan Bachao Trust.

Representing the petitioner, Senior Advocate Meenakshi Arora today apprised the Bench that no response has been submitted by the Election Commission, despite the Apex Court specifically directing the ECI to file a response in its previous order.

Appearing for the ECI, Advocate Amit Sharma sought time for filing a response.

The Bench, while refusing to issue notice on the petition, directed the Commission to file a short counter within two weeks on the steps it has taken to revise the electoral rolls and tackle the issue of duplication of entries in the instances where the voters had either expired or had shifted their place of residence.
