The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear the petition filed by Zee News anchor Rohit Ranjan on July 7, Thursday, over the broadcast of a ‘doctored’ video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Zee News.
The matter was mentioned before the bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice JK Maheshwari by Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra.
Appearing for Rohit Ranjan, Luthra told the court that Uttar Pradesh police had arrested the journalist on Tuesday and later released him on bail.
However, Chhattisgarh police arrived in Ghaziabad on Tuesday and sought his arrest, besides urgent hearing in the same case.
The anchor claimed that Chhattisgarh police did not follow the due law of informing the local police first.
“Chhattisgarh Police is standing outside my house to arrest me without informing the local police, is it legal,” Ranjan had tweeted in Hindi on Tuesday and tagged UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the UP police in the post.
During the hearing, Luthra said this man was arrested yesterday by Noida police and released on bail. He had made an error in one of his shows. Now Chhattisgarh police wants to arrest him. Luthra asked the bench to list it urgently otherwise he will be in repeated custody. There are multiple FIRs.
Justice Banerjee then said it will be listed tomorrow.
