Taking a serious note of the recent mob lynching incident in Hapur (UP) in which two persons were thrashed over suspicion of killing a cow, the apex court on Monday (August 13) directed Meerut Inspector General of police to protect survivors.   Additionally, the court also asked the police to submit a detailed report on the incident.

On June 18, two Muslim men named Qasim and Shamsuddin were attacked by a group of men on suspicion of being involved in cow slaughter. Qasim was lynched and died on the spot and Shamsuddin, was seriously injured.

Shamsuddin had filed the plea seeking court-monitored SIT probe into the lynching of Qasim by cow vigilantes and contented that the Uttar Pradesh Police had ignored the top court’s July 17 directions to curb lynchings.
