Two Supreme Court lawyers have moved the Apex Court, seeking CBI probe into the Lakhimpur Kheri incident that claimed eight lives and left several injured, as well as directions to the Ministry of Home Affairs to register an FIR into the case and take action against those responsible for the incident.
The petition, filed by Advocates Shiv Kumar Tripathi and C.S. Panda, sought direction to the Ministry of Home Affairs to register an FIR against the guilty and take action against the Union government, state government, the concerned bureaucrats and the state police machinery, so that “the cult of violence comes to a grinding halt”.
the petitioners took suo motu cognisance of the media reports regarding the violence and said, “The latest development in the state of UP is a burning example as to how the issue of agriculture policy touching the livelihood of the farmers countrywide is engaging attention of the political masters led by the Union government at New Delhi. The agitating farmers have remained peaceful in their protest towards the justiceability of their just demands and claims for the reasonable deal for the betterment of agricultural communities struggling for their livelihood within the meaning of Article 21 of the Constitution of India. They are now on the road representing the multitude of the masses of the country, beset in the ongoing Novel Coronavirus crisis, without any self-interest.

“The human right violation in a democratic country like a India coupled with police excesses at the end of the government of UP is the scope, scale and ambit of the present communication,” it added.
