Palghar lynching case: Supreme Court adjourns hearing till next week on SG’s request

The Supreme Court three-judge bench of Justices Ashok Bushan, Subhash Reddy and MR Shah heard a batch pleas seeking CBI and NIA probes into the Palghar lynching case, alleging bias in the present investigation by the state authorities.

In the case Mahant Shradhananad Saraswati vs. the State of Maharashtra, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested the court for an adjournment. Justice Shah asked: “What is the reason for seeking adjournment?” Mehta said it was due to personal difficulty.

Petitions were filed on behalf of   Mahant Shradhananad Saraswati and Ghanshyam Upadhyay before the top court, stating that the video clips that had emerged on the date of the incident depicted how the police might have played an active role in the lynching of the shadhus at Palghar. The demand for a CBI investigation had been made jointly by Mahant Swami Shradhananad Saraswati and six other sadhus of the Juna Akhara, followed by a second petition which had been moved for an NIA probe by Ghanshyam Upadhyay.

The matter has been adjourned till next week.
