Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana on Wednesday said a person who retires or is going to retire from his professional life has no value in India.
CJI Ramana is to demit the office in two days (August 26, 2022).
The Apex Court has today asked the Centre why should it not have an all-party meeting to determine issues pertaining to election freebies. During the last hearing, the court while acknowledging the complex nature of the issue, had said that the intention of the Court was to initiate a wider public debate on the issue, and it is for that purpose the constitution of an expert body was mooted.
The CJI made this remark while he was hearing the case pertaining to the freebies promised by political parties before elections.
The Court is mooting setting up of a committee to examine the issue.
While the hearing on the freebies matter was going on Wednesday, the Senior Advocate Vikas Singh said that such a committee should be headed by a retired Supreme Court judge.
Vikas Singh said, “I was suggesting a retired Supreme Court judge to head the committee like Justice (RM) Lodha.”
The CJI responded, “The person who retires or is going to retire has no value in this country.”
Senior Advocate Vikas Singh said, “It is the personality of the person concerned which impacts.”
Justice Ramana took charge as the Supreme Court judge on February 17, 2014, while he became CJI on April 24, 2021 and will soon retire from office on August 26.
