Registry to examine suggestion to include links of virtual hearing matters in causelist: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has asked its Registry for examining the suggestion which were made by the Senior Advocate Indira Jaising for including links of video conference hearings in the Court’s causelist.

A bench comprising of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli while hearing a plea have  passed the direction seeking proper implementation of live streaming of proceedings across High Courts.

The Court has directed that they have heard the prayer of putting link in the cause list and this decision shall be looked into by the registry.

The Senior Advocate Jaising had suggested that Supreme Court could adopt the model of Karnataka High Court where the video conference link is provided in the causelist uploaded on the High Court website.

The senior lady also suggested for physical transcription to maintain proof of the court proceedings.

The CJI liked the suggestion but said it was a costly affair since the cost of physical transcription is too high since it requires an army of people.

The CJI however, stated that the suggestion about links in the causelist is important.

With the assistance of National Informatics Centre (NIC),the top Court plans to have its own platform to livestream its proceedings which can then be carried to the High Courts as well.

During the hearing, to maintain the sanctity of the judicial institution, the Court is looking into the issue of video clips of court proceedings on the internet that are often uploaded in a truncated manner without providing context.
