The Supreme Court on Tuesday continued the CBI custody of P Chidambaram to Sep 5 in the INX Media corruption case and asked Chidambaram’s counsel not to push for the interim bail plea which they had filed in the trial court till Sep 5.
A bench comprising Justices R Banumathi and AS Bopanna further directed that it will hear Chidambaram’s plea challenging the non-bailable warrant and remand orders of the trial court on
Sep 5.
The bench yesterday had granted the protection to Chidambaram till today after his counsel Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal had pleaded to the bench that his client should not be sent to Tihar jail as his CBI custody expires today.
“There must be some protection to Chidambaram. He is 74-year-old man. Let him be put under house arrest and not sent to Tihar jail,” Sibal had pleaded.
“Learned Solicitor General, has submitted that the 15 days of remand of the petitioner expires tomorrow and therefore there may be jurisdictional difficulties in implementing the orders of this court passed in the forenoon session and requests that the matter be listed tomorrow,” the order said.
