SC throws out plea raising doubts over Rahul’s competency to fight elections on the basis of his alleged British citizenship

The Supreme Court on Thursday junked a plea seeking debarment of Rahul Gandhi from contesting Lok Sabha elections on the basis of Gandhi’s alleged British citizenship.

The plea filed by members of two right-wing organizations had raised concerns over Gandhi’s British citizenship while seeking Supreme Court intervention to direct Election Commission (EC) to decide his eligibility to fight elections.

The petitioners’ counsel had alleged that Gandhi in the official documents of UK-based company had mentioned that he is a British citizen and has forego his Indian citizenship.

As per the provisions of Constitution of India read with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, Gandhi is unqualified to contest elections, the counsel had said in the plea.
