States Are Dead Against NEET; Supreme Court Asks Medical Council of India To Respond By May 5th

National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) is in deep trouble, again. Supreme Court today heard petitions by various states and some private medical colleges, regarding separate entrance exams for medical seats this year.

Answering the petition, Supreme Court asked Medical Council of India (MCI) to respond by Thursday (May 5th, 2016).

From the arguments presented by representatives of different states, it is clear that they are dead against the implementation of NEET, and they want a status quo on this matter, which is a separate entrance exam for every state.

Yesterday, Supreme Court had appointed a 3-member committee to oversee MCI’s workings and to determine whether a common entrance test like NEET is feasible or not. This panel is being headed by Former Chief Justice of India, RM Lodha.

On May 1st, MCI conducted their first common entrance test under NEET, where reportedly over 6 lakh students appeared. Next NEET date was July 24th; and based on the petitions filed by States, it is not yet clear whether this entrance exam would be conducted or not.

September 30th is the deadline for completion of medical entrance test; and results of both NEET exams (May 1st & July 24th) are supposed to be declared on August 17th.
