Supreme Court rejects Asaram Bapu bail plea for seeking medical treatment for Covid

The bench of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Krishna Murari agreed to examine Asaram’s plea to be treated at the ayurvedic centre near Haridwar by shifting him there under custody from the Rajasthan prison, where he is jailed.

The Supreme Court today declined to grant bail for medical treatment to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is undergoing life imprisonment in a sexual assault case.

The bench of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Krishna Murari, however, agreed to examine Asaram’s plea to get the treatment done at an ayurvedic centre near Haridwar by shifting him there under custody from Rajasthan jail, where he is undergoing life imprisonment.

Asaram’s Counsel Sidharth Luthra contended before the apex court that Asaram was suffering from Covid-19 and his health condition is deteriorating continuously.

Luthra further said Asaram is losing weight rapidly and he wants to get himself treated at Prakash Deep Ayurvedic Institute, Uttarakhand.

The Bench said the jail administration can get Asaram treated. “Why does he need bail for medical treatment?” it asked.

However, the Apex Court issued notice to Rajasthan government and gave it time till June 8 to reply on the same.
