The Supreme Court issued notice on Monday to the Union of India, Bihar government and former Bihar MP Anand Mohan Singh on a petition against Bihar government’s decision to grant premature release to Mohan in the case related to mob lynching of Gopalganj District Magistrate G. Krishnaiah in 1994.
The Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice J.K. Maheshwari gave the respondents two weeks time to file their replies. The Bench further directed the Bihar government to place before it, all records related to the case.
The Apex Court passed the orders on a petition filed by Uma Krishnaiah, widow of G Krishnaiah, who was killed after a mob led by Mohan attacked him on December 31, 1994 near Muzaffarpur.
In 2007, a trial court had convicted the gangster-turned-politician to death sentence for his alleged involvement in mob lynching of G. Krishnaiah. The High Court of Patna commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment in 2008.
On April 24 this year, after serving 14 years of imprisonment, Anand Mohan Singh walked out of the prison, following the recent amendments made in the prison rules by Bihar government, allowing the early release of 27 convicts including Singh.
