Supreme Court to take up pleas challenging constitutional validity of Section 6A of Citizenship Act from October 17

The Supreme Court on Wednesday listed a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955 for hearing from October 17 onwards.

The Bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice AS Bopanna, Justice MM Sundresh, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra observed that the title of the proceedings should be ‘In Re Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955’.

Taking note of the common compilation prepared by the nodal counsels, the Apex Court said that the same had to be streamlined in terms of the Supreme Court circular and a common index had to be prepared.

The Bench granted the nodal counsels time till October 3 to submit a soft copy of the common compilation and directed them to file written submissions by October 10. Noting that the Apex Court would need at least a week to get a ‘flavour of the matter’ and to do its own reading, the Apex Court listed the matter for further hearing from October 17 onwards.
