Supreme Court to hear defamation plea against Rahul Gandhi on September 8

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on September 8, a petition filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The case was filed by a worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Rajesh Kunte.

Kunte had alleged in his plea that during an election rally near Bhiwandi on March 6, 2014, Rahul had said that “the RSS people killed (Mahatma) Gandhi”.

In July, 2016, the Supreme Court had observed that the Congress leader should not have resorted to collective denunciation of an organisation.

It directed Rahul to either apologise for his remarks, or face trial. The Congress leader refused to accept the suggestion and expressed willingness to face a trial.
