Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to 34 persons convicted concurrently by the trial court and the Delhi High Court and having been sentenced to five years imprisonment for rioting and arson in Trilokpuri area during the anti-Sikh riots of 1984.

Earlier, on July 5, the Supreme Court acquitted seven people in the concerned case citing lack of evidence, after this the Delhi Police had filed to conduct a review on their acquittal.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, submitted in the court about the government’s petition filed in the case and said, “The government’s petition seeking review of earlier decision by the apex court’s quashing concurrent convictions of seven persons in anti-Sikh riots case was also pending and it would not be prudent to grant bail to these 34 convicts, as well.”

However, the Supreme Court decided to grant bail to 34 persons who had challenged a Delhi High Court verdict sentencing them to five years jail term for rioting and arson during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
