The Apex Court has granted bail to BJP leader Hardik Patel in cases of rioting, violence and arson which were filed against him during the 2015 Patidar agitation in Gujarat.
A bench of Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Hima Kohli finalized the earlier interim which was passed by the Top court for granting relief to Patel in the matter.
The Patidar agitation happened in Gujarat seeking reservation for the Patidar community.
An interim protection had been granted to the leader from arrest in February 2020 who then was a part of the congress party.
The leader had moved Supreme Court against a decision of the Gujarat High Court which denied him anticipatory bail in the 2015 case.
A lower court in Mehsana,Gujarat had convicted Patel and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
The leader had the moved to the Gujarat High Court seeking suspension of his conviction for him to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The High Court did not accept this application and plea and rejected it.
He then moved the Supreme Court in appeal against this order, which stayed the conviction in April last year.
