Supreme Court rejects plea seeking enforcement of guidelines for state-imposed internet shutdown

The Supreme Court refused to entertain a miscellaneous application on Thursday, which sought enforcement of its guidelines for state-imposed internet shutdowns.

The Bench of Justice BR Gavai, Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Aravind Kumar told the petitioners that they had other remedies, in case the Apex Court verdict in Anuradha Bhasin was not being enforced.

It further pointed out that so many people had apprehensions about enforcement, even when Article 144 was there.

Questioning the maintainability of the MA, the Bench said it had become functus officio. The petitioner was then granted liberty to withdraw the application.

The Apex Court said that it condemned reopening of disposed of matters by civil applications, adding that it made a mistake earlier by issuing notice.
