The Supreme Court is set to deliver two verdicts tomorrow on issues related to the ruling dispensation at New Delhi and Maharashtra, with the outcome likely to impact the politics of the state and the Union territory.
The first case is related to the disputes between Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde factions following the rift in the Shiv Sena party, which led to drastic political changes and even change of power in the state of Maharashtra.
The second major verdict to be delivered by the Apex Court tomorrow pertains to the dispute between the Delhi Government and the Lieutenant Governor regarding who has the power to control administrative services in the national capital.
The announcement was made today by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, while hearing the petitions seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriages.
While stating that the Supreme Court has a reference and two Constitution Bench judgments to deliver tomorrow, the CJI told Senior Advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the petitioners, that the argument in the same-sex marriage case can commence tomorrow at about 12 noon only, as it was a ‘crowded’ morning on May 11.
Both the cases are being heard by a five-judge Bench comprising the CJI, Justice M.R. Shah, Justice Krishna Murari, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice P.S. Narasimha. Justice Shah, the second senior judge in the bench, is set to retire on May 15.
