Supreme Court decides to hear petition filed by Bilkis Bano challenging release of convicts

The Apex Court has decided to hear the writ petition filed by Bilkis Bano that  challenges the early release of the 11 men who were convicted for the offence of rape and murder on December 13 during riots in Gujarat.

A division bench  comprising of Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice Bela Trivedi will hear the matter.

Appearing on behalf of Bilkis Bano ,her counsel Advocate Shobha Gupta mentioned the petition before a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, on November 30.

Bilkis Bano in her plea mentioned that she approached the state government requesting the papers or entire file relating to the premature release of all the convicts, but got no aid.

Bilkis Bano has also said that she had no clue about any such process of remission or premature release initiated.

She has called Gujarat’s remission order a mechanical order that completely ignores the law requirement as laid down

The petition states how the entire Nation along with her was shocked by the news of the premature release of all the convicts.

People were shocked at the insensitivity when these convicts were garlanded and felicitated in full public glare.

In another petition, which was filed in the Supreme Court, the Gujarat government in its affidavit informed the SC that these 11 convicts were released after they completed a 14 year sentence on good behaviour and the central government’s approval.
