The Supreme Court Thursday refused to entertain a petition by the government of West Bengal Government for registering a First Information Report (FIR) against the Suvendu Adhikari, in a case where during his blanket distribution program , three people died in stampede.
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi sought the Courts liberty to file an FIR against the leader. The senior advocate informed the Court that Adhikari was granted blanket protection from future FIRs by Justice Rajasekhar Mantha of the Calcutta High Court, due to which state could not file a FIR against him despite deaths during the stampede.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that the State could move Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court for appropriate directions.
The plea was withdrawn taking this consideration and the State will now move Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.
On Wednesday, December 14, at least three people died and several others were injured in a stampede which took place during a blanket distribution program organised by Adhikari in West Bengal’s Asansol.
