The Supreme Court on Monday declined to pass any order on a petition filed by Afshan Ansari, wife of Mukhtar Ansari, seeking safety for her husband, while the SP MLA from Mau, Uttar Pradesh was taken for trial in pending cases.
A Bench of Justice R. Subhash Reddy and Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked Afshan to file a petition in the Allahabad High Court, while directing the High Court to expeditiously hear the matter.
During the hearing in the court, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Mukhtar, said that after the order of the Supreme Court, Mukhtar was transferred from Punjab jail to Uttar Pradesh jail. Ansari’s life is in danger because even leaders of the ruling party in UP talk about shooting criminals, Sibal said.
Afshan had filed a petition in the Supreme Court and called Mukhtar Ansari’s life in danger. The petition claimed that there should be a fair trial in the case and that Mukhtar should not be confronted. It was said in the petition that Mafia Don Brajesh Singh is part of the government and is very influential. He can plot to kill Mukhtar Ansari with the support of the government, the plea alleged.

The petitioner further said that her husband is a politician and he has won by contesting against the ruling party, which leads to a lot of political rivalry. Afshan Ansari also averred in the petition that her husband is a witness in many such cases in which influential people of the ruling party are accused.
Before Mukhtar Ansari reached Banda Jail, the jail was converted into a police cantonment. Describing a threat to his life in UP, Mukhtar Ansari had surrendered in a minor case in Punjab and was imprisoned there since then. The Punjab government had also opposed his transfer to UP.
