The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the direction passed by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of Calcutta High Court, directing the Secretary General of the Apex Court to provide him the transcription copy of his interview given to a news channel.

The decision was taken by a Special Bench of the Apex Court in a suo motu sitting held at 8 pm.

A couple of hours ago, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had directed the Secretary General of the Supreme Court to provide him by midnight, the transcription copy of his interview to a news channel, which was placed before the Apex Court.

Hearing a suo motu matter, Justice Gangopadhyay observed that he would be waiting in his chamber till 12:15 am to receive two original sets of the official translation of interview given by him and placed before the top court of the country, along with an affidavit of the Registrar General of the High Court in this regard.

The judge said this was required for the sake of transparency.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court had directed the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court to transfer the proceedings pending before Justice Gangopadhyay against Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee in relation to the school-for-jobs case, to some other Bench.

The Bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha said that it has passed the order after taking into consideration the note prepared by Justice Gangopadhyay in respect of Annexure P7 and also after perusing the transcript of the interview, which was authenticated on April 26, 2023 by the interpreting officer on the original side of the High Court.

Earlier, the top court of the country had taken strong objection to the interview given by sitting Calcutta High Court judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay to news channel ABP Ananda regarding a case related to Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee being heard by him.
