Supreme Court to hear Sterlite plea for reopening plant in December

New Delhi (ILNS): The Supreme Court today decided that the plea from Vedanta, for the reopening of the Sterlite Copper plant in Tamil Nadu, will be heard in December.

The counsel for Vedanta told the court that various conditions for the operation of the Sterlite plant have been duly complied. Therefore the Sterlite plant should be allowed to reopen on a trial basis.

Countering this, the Tamil Nadu government said the order was for a permanent closure. So, the Sterlite plant should not be allowed to reopen.

A two-judge bench of Justices Navin Sinha and K. M. Joseph has asked the Sterlite management to file affidavit, while setting the matter up for December.

The Court was hearing the appeal filed by Vedanta against the refusal of Madras High Court which had refused to allow reopening of Sterlite Copper Plant in Thoothikudi, Tamilnadu.
