Tis Hazari clash: Supreme Court and High Court both stirred to action

The Supreme Court of India has directed its Ld. Secretary General to process a letter petition represented by the Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association (SCAORA) to take suo motu cognizance on the incident that unfolded at Tis Hazari Court on Saturday.

The Executive Committee of the SCAORA met the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India along with Justice NV Ramana on Sunday to discuss the brutual Police action & to formulate guidelines for protection of India’s lawyers in such circumstances against the high handedness of police authorities.

As reported by India Legal earlier, on Sunday, Delhi High Court took Suo Motu cognizance of the incidence and passed a slew of directions. Delhi High Court ordered for a Judicial Inquiry under Retd. Justice SP Garg to be completed within 6 weeks. It directed the Commissioner of Delhi Police to record the Statement of the injured lawyers and register FIR. Also to provide best possible medical treatment to the injured advocates. Delhi High Court directed to pay 50,000 as compensation to Advocate Vijay Kumar, 25,000 & 10000 to other two injured Advocates. If the need arises, more compensation will be paid, court said.

Previously, four FIRs were lodged in total – one on the complaint of District judge, one on the complaint of police personnel and two on the complaint of lawyers.

Bar Council of Delhi has announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh each of the two lawyers who were in ICU and Rs 50,000 to the other lawyers who got injured. Police personnel including SHO Rajeev Bhardwaj, were also injured in the clash and several vehicles vandalized by the angry mob on Saturday.
