The Supreme Court bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and M.R. Shah has allowed jailed Preeti Chandra, the wife of Unitech promoter Sanjay Chandra, a day to attend the funeral ceremony of her grandmother.
The court also asked Preeti Chandra to deposit her passport with the investigating officer.
The court, while allowing Preeti to come out of jail between 10 am and 3 pm, said that during this time, a police escort will be with her and she will not use her phone or any other communication device.
The Enforcement Directorate had opposed the relief, saying she was a flight risk and has acquired citizenship of the Dominican Republic, with which India has no extradition treaty, and that the agency does not want to “burn its hands” by allowing her to flee the country.

Preeti Chandra claimed that her maternal grandmother expired on March 14 and she needed to attend the funeral ceremonies.
Preeti Chandra was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in October 2021 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 and is currently lodged in Tihar Jail.
