COVID precaution: SC wants report on ‘good practices’ at govt children’s homes

The Supreme Court today (June 21) asked the Amicus Curiae to prepare a note on all the “good practices” being followed in each State for the care and welfare of children, especially in these pandemic times. This is in reference to government-run children’s homes.

The bench, comprising Justices L. Nageswara Rao, Hemant Gupta and S. Ravindra Bhat was hearing a petition titled: ‘Contagion of COVID 19 virus in children protection’.

Ms Aishwarya Bhati, the Additional Solicitor General appearing for the Union of India, requested two weeks’ time to file an affidavit giving particulars of the funds to be made available to all the state governments and union territories, noted the Court in its order.

“The learned Amicus Curiae is requested to prepare a note on the good practices that are being adopted by various States for the care and welfare of the children on the basis of which we propose to issue certain directions as sought for by him. The note may be circulated to all the Advocates on Record of the States and Union Territories. Response by the State Governments and UTs, if any, may be filed before the next date of hearing,” said the Court in its order.

The bench also directed Centre to file an affidavit within two weeks on funds provided by it for shelter homes for children.

The matter has been listed for next hearing on August 13.
