National Green Tribunal on Wednesday dismissed a petition filed against illegal water tankers allegedly operating in Delhi. The petition alleges that the increase in number of illegal tankers has lead to the birth of water mafia responsible for drilling roughly over 2,00,000 borewells for the purpose of extracting ground water.
A bench of JUSTICE ADARSH KUMAR GOEL CHAIRPERSON, JUSTICE S. P. WANGDI JUDICIAL MEMBER, JUSTICE K. RAMAKRISHN while dismissing the petition said “The petition does not have any material, it simply alleges corruption is taking place without stating any names.”
The bench further told the counsel to not to file such petitions otherwise huge penalties would be imposed for the next time.
The petition alleges Delhi Jal Board deploys around 900 water tankers every day to supply water to houses in the Capital & there are more than twice as many private and unregistered water tankers that operate in Delhi. It also claims that there is no check on the sources from the Private and unregistered tankers extract water.
