Tirath Singh Rawat will be the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand after the resignation of Trivendra Singh Rawat on Tuesday. His name was announced by outgoing chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat after the legislature party meeting, which lasted around 30 minutes.
Rawat, 56, is a BJP MP from the Pauri constituency. He was the party chief in Uttarakhand in 2013-15 and also an MLA from the state in the past. He will be sworn in later today.
Tirath Singh Rawat was the first education minister of the newly formed state Uttarakhand. After this, he was elected as state general secretary of Uttarakhand in 2007 and after that state chief electoral officer and state membership chief. In 2012, he was elected as legislative assembly member (MLA) and in 2013 he became Uttarakhand BJP Chief.
Rawat said he wants to thank PM Modi, BJP chief, Home Minister and central leadership who trusted me, a mere party worker who comes from a small village. He had never imagined that he’d reach here. The party will make all efforts to meet people’s expectations and take forward the work done in the last 4 years, he added.
He was picked over prominent candidates including Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Uttarakhand Minister Dhan Singh Rawat.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned from his post on Tuesday. Rawat submitted his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya. Rawat, after his resignation, said that he had been in politics for a long time starting with the RSS and that he had never imagined to be a Chief Minister one day. Serving as a CM was a golden opportunity, he added.
