Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor has filed a dowry harassment complaint under Section 498(A) and 34 of Indian Penal Code(IPC) against her husband Sanjay Kapur, and mother-in-law, at Khar police station, Mumbai today.
According to Section 498(A), whoever, being the husband or the relative of the husband of a woman, subjects woman to cruelty shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and shall also be liable to fine.
The couple had filed for divorce with mutual consent in Bandra Family Court in May 2014 after their marriage hit a rocky patch. However, the petition was withdrawn by them in November, 2015 reportedly due to alimony issues. The celebrity couple also clashed over constituting a trust for their children: Samaira and Kiaan, since neither the parent could agree on the terms and conditions.
Charges have been flying thick and fast from both the sides as the divorce became acrimonious. While Karisma has accused her husband of being a substance abuser, and infidelity, the industrialist on his part, has blamed the Bollywood diva of being an irresponsible wife, and mother. In a fresh petition filed in December last year, Kapur also alleged that Karisma had already “extracted” a huge amount of money from him, and then did a u-turn on the terms and conditions of divorce that were set.
He had also alleged that the actress, who ruled Bollywood in late 90s and 2000, got married to him for money, so that she could take care of her lavish lifestyle.
Trouble started brewing in their 13-year old marriage after Karisma shifted from Delhi to Mumbai. Kapur had admittedly told his friends that she wanted to pursue her career in Bollywood, which he was not comfortable with.
